The Division of Public Health Services (DPHS) is investigating a cluster of hepatitis C cases related to Exeter Hospital. The approximately 1,200 patients who were treated in the Cardiac Catheterization Lab (CCL) between October 1, 2010 and May 25, 2012 and determined to be at risk of exposure have been tested for hepatitis C. Of these, so far 32 patients have tested positive for the outbreak strain of the virus, in addition to a previous technician in the CCL. The cause of the outbreak is believed to be drug diversion by the infected healthcare worker.
Recently, DPHS expanded the testing to include approximately 3,300 patients who had procedures in the main inpatient operating room (OR) or the intensive care unit (ICU) at Exeter Hospital between April 1, 2011 and May 25, 2012.
Hepatitis C is a liver disease caused by the hepatitis C virus (HCV), which is found in the blood of persons who have this disease. HCV is spread by blood-to-blood contact with an infected person. Please contact the Bureau of Infectious Disease Control at
