The Virology/Special Testing Laboratory is a comprehensive virology laboratory that provides testing for a variety of infectious disease agents such as Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type I (HIV-1); hepatitis A, B and C viruses; influenza viruses (see Influenza Testing below); sexually transmitted disease (STD) agents; and various other agents (see Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus Testing below).

The Vector-borne Disease laboratory tests for the presence of West Nile Virus (WNV) as well as other Vector-borne diseases such as Eastern Equine Encephalitis, Lyme disease and Saint Louis Encephalitis. The laboratory plays an important role in NH's Arboviral Illness Surveillance and Response Plan by providing quality assured, timely laboratory testing for agents causing human encephalitis. The Vector-borne Disease laboratory uses both serological and molecular testing methods to detect the presence of these viruses. Clinicians can submit specimens for serological assays from patients with a diagnosis of encephalitis or aseptic meningitis. Avian, equine and mosquito samples are tested by molecular methods.
