WIC Physician Fact Sheets
Women, Infants & Children (WIC) is a preventive public health nutrition program that provides nutrition and breastfeeding education, nutritious foods, and improved access to regular health care and social services for low and moderate-income women and young children with, or at risk of developing, nutrition related health problems. Physicians and health care providers play an important role in assuring all income eligible women and preschool children enroll in the WIC Nutrition Program to receive healthy foods, nutrition education, and breastfeeding support.
WIC is important to achieving national public health goals. The Healthy People 2020 national initiative identifies two major Healthy People 2020 goals and nearly 30 health objectives related to WIC services.
- Promote health and reduce chronic disease risk through the consumption of healthful diets and achievement and maintenance of healthy body weights.
- Improve the health and well-being of women, infants, children, and families.
Health care providers are invited to contact the State WIC Agency at (800) 942-4321 to request copies of WIC outreach, nutrition, and breastfeeding printed materials or tor request an inservice for office, clinic, or hospital staff.
