Concord, NH – The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is inviting families, stakeholders, and the public to an event highlighting the role Special Medical Services (SMS) has played in the lives of children and youth with special health care needs, and their families, over the last 75 years. The event will take place Friday, June 1st, from 3:00pm – 7:00pm and will be held at the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center in Concord.

This will be an opportunity for people to learn more about the evolution of services from what was originally called the "Crippled Children’s Program" in 1937 to what is now known as SMS and includes community-based specialty clinics, coordination programs, specialty consultation, and more.

SMS has had the privilege of helping to support families in many ways over the years. One parent whose child was helped by the program shared this about her experience: "In 1984, my then 2-year-old son, had a seizure disorder, many orthopedic problems, scoliosis, a cardiac issue and feeding challenges, he needed a multitude of evaluations, consultations and treatment options. His doctor sent us to Special Medical Services. For years we had great coordination of services, impeccably kept records and a coordinator who got to know him and our family. We will be forever grateful to the many supports Special Medical Services has given us over the years."

Staff, community partners, families, and the public are invited to come together for this event to reflect on the past and envision the future. There will be a number of exhibits, as well as a chance to meet with and talk to other families and providers. In addition, SMS will be revealing a new Strategic Plan identifying Strategic Intentions for 2020.

Registration is not required for this ‘Open House’. Light refreshments will be offered, and attendees will be able to access the Discovery Center’s exhibits.
